My long term love affair with Greece very nearly ended this week with one of the worse, death defying drives ever, car or motorhome, over several mountain ranges from the lovely ancient walled city of Monemvasia, at the tip of the Peloponnese to Nafplio tucked in a curved bay heading back towards Athens. We had been at another World Heritage site -Mystras, listed ruins of … [Read more...] about Once, Twice, Three Times Souvlaki!
It’s a First
We left Italy with a last feast of home-cooked pork chops, potatoes and two veg, cooked in the port whilst waiting to board. There was some doubt as to whether the chops might have been horse meat as we brought them from a local market, but if they were, they did a good impression of very tasty pork. The sixteen-hour crossing to Patra with Grimaldi Lines remained as ever … [Read more...] about It’s a First
Taking Its Toll
As we left France they managed to take a spectacular last few Euro’s from us for the privilege, the main one being €61.20 to drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel. To be fair it did save a huge chunk of driving. Being slightly tunnel phobic I was a bit nervous and so with it being David’s drive day, I just put my head down and wrote up my diary for the last week which had been … [Read more...] about Taking Its Toll
Leaving Europe
And we have-us to Switzerland. A temporary bolt to Geneva to catch up with family as we see out January. We, as we travel through on our journey are leaving more and more of the UK behind- our fresh supplies from our last UK shop have now more or less diminished- bacon, sausages, ham, burgers,(homemade from site in Chichester-very nice), potatoes, butter, oranges so we are … [Read more...] about Leaving Europe
And They’re Off!
Eventually!! After missing the original departure date of the 28th December, we finally hit the road on Sunday 19th January 2020. Carol, our landlady (female version of Rigsby-Rising Damp) since the 20th December having only expected to have us for 8 days threw a party to celebrate our leaving -we weren’t invited but she did see us off on the Sunday with a last bacon … [Read more...] about And They’re Off!
Leaving NiKi
Leaving NiKi 5th June to 2nd July 2017 After a wonderful last weekend in Ypres having a mix of history, culture, cycling, food and drink on the Tuesday 6th June David, NiKi, Pinkie, Lilly, Codie, Carol and I headed north towards the port of Calais and our train ride back to the UK. The weather was oddly exactly the same as when we left-grey and winds howling and … [Read more...] about Leaving NiKi
The Last Post?
29th May to 4th June 2017 As we both sit contemplating our last weekend, writing our last post it seemed only fitting that our last stop before our ferry home on Tuesday was in Ypres, where the Last Post has a much deeper meaningful reason and nothing can quite prepare you for that sound each evening. I would defy anyone not to have tears in their eyes during this very … [Read more...] about The Last Post?
Going Naked
Week 15th – 21st May 2017 Truly scrumptious or not is the food of Germany? For me not, in respect of the main and traditional dishes-bratwurst, sauerkraut and heavy meat dishes with big spuds. My absolute idea of yuck, worse than school dinners including lumpy mash with black bits. However what has been delicious and absolutely seasonal has been the sparkle as … [Read more...] about Going Naked
